I'd love to be able to automatically enter tax rates given an address. This was a quick first pass to get it working and out the door.
Interestingly, when I researched it (wanting to do as you mentioned and derive the sales tax from zip code), I found that zip code alone is not sufficient to determine the tax rate. Within a given area, there can be multiple zones with different tax rates - in many cases there may be a different rate just across the street (while even in the same city and zip code).
Things also get a bit complicated because the taxing responsibilities for companies change frequently with either laws (or threats of law leading to negotiations like Amazon/Texas), company expansion/contraction into/out of regions, etc. Keeping track of what companies need to be taxed for each state/region could get tricky.
So in the end the tax rate auto-entry problem was a bit more complicated than I was willing to bite off right now. I'm sure there is a solution available that could fill in all the necessary tax data from an address though... perhaps something for the future.
I am removing their prices now - I apologize for that. It appears their price data feed has gone bonkers (again).
I can certainly try! :)
Also, the 650s and 660s are now listed: http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#c=115,114
Was hoping to have them in already, but it's been a bit crazy today. I should be able to get them in tonight.
You're right - the values are an estimate of the peak value. There isn't any headroom built in, however. So when choosing a power supply, you'll want to factor in some headroom (the amount of which depending on the quality of the PSU). I hope to do that last bit automatically eventually.
Thanks for the suggestion! That's something I've noticed quite a bit recently. The pre-build posts have picked up quite a bit. Unfortunately for now there isn't a place for them, so I've had to remove them from the completed builds listings (as that list is indexed by parts so people can see who uses what). I will definitely look into providing a mechanism and/or area for pre-builds. :)
Hmmm. I'll look into it. Thanks for letting me know.
You know, I guess I never thought to add warm weather clothes to the store - where I live it usually stays warm enough that you can wear T-shirts all year long... I'll look into some long sleeved / hoodie versions. :)
On the mobile site - in all honesty it's still a ways away (for now). Though it is something I'm actively looking into. I certainly haven't forgotten about it.
Definitely. Thanks for the suggestion!
It is possible - are you trying to name a saved build? If so, once you save it, on the saved builds page there should be a rename button for that part list.
When you view your part list, there is a snippet of text that reads something like "Built this configuration? Show it off!" The "show it off" bit is a link that will take you to a form you can use to enter in your build.
Thanks for letting me know! I've removed the images for now (hopefully can find some correct ones).
Nice and clean - great job!
Unfortunately not yet.
Thanks for the feedback! The optional URL field is something I plan to show soon. I had hidden it by default because I suspected it would be used by spammers... and it has been. So I'm looking into handling that properly. I think I have a solution for it, but I'm still tweaking it here and there before pushing it live. Also, adding a price field for the custom URL is definitely in the works. I'd expect both the URL change and the ability to add a price to roll out about the same time.
That can certainly be added. At this point, the "Remove All" is essentially the same, though it doesn't prompt you to save yet before it wipes the slate clean. Maybe it would be worth renaming it (and adding a save prompt in case you didn't want to lose your current part list)?
It is coming, and very soon, I promise! :)
Congrats on your first build!
Really pretty build. Very impressive!
There should be some now. They are still resolving prices for merchants, with more prices being added by the hour.
Absolutely - that's how I read it. :)
At the moment the best way is via the contact form. I know that's pretty tedious though, so I'll look into adding a "report this price" type link/button/something-or-other. Thanks for letting me know about those two. The USB key... wow. That has been removed.
And I definitely appreciate your feedback, good and bad. I'm glad you find the site useful! Both positive and negative feedback helps me improve on it, so I'm always here and listening.
Eventually I'd like to add in more peripheral type devices (like USB drives), so I'll definitely keep that in mind!
Will look into it - thanks!
Will do, thanks!
I will definitely look into that. Thanks!
I'm pretty sure that is allowed - most operating systems that I know of support multiple sound devices.
I think we're on the same page - it would copy to the scratch pad, but then when you saved you would have the option of saving to an existing build or to a new build. There woudn't be any more automatically updating saved/completed builds.
So as we speak I'm in the midst of transitioning to a slightly different server architecture for the site. If everything works properly hopefully no one will notice a difference at all. :) After that is completed and stable, changes to the partlist will be the #1 priority.
Nice pictures! Love how you used the bokeh to highlight the parts. Everything looks very clean and tidy.
If only I had seen your build about 30 minutes ago... I literally just ordered some test bench "cases" for benchmarking here on the site, but I think I like yours better. (sigh, oh well!)
Definite yes to both suggestions. :)
After thinking about it a lot, I'm not terribly happy with the way the new build switching works. I'm probably going to switch it to a model that is similar to the way it was before. I'd love to get your input if you think it would be better or not:
Here very soon I'll be changing it up to be a lot more like the old system. Basically what happened was that I wanted the ability to edit saved and completed builds... but the implementation I ended up with definitely has some usability problems. I'm not happy with the way it ended up, so I'll be changing it soon. Hopefully yet another change in how the builds are managed doesn't frustrate people too much. I'd rather it be right though than stick with what is there now.
Here's what I was thinking of doing:
In a nutshell, changes will always be made on the system build "scratchpad" if you will. Then when you go to save, you will be able to save to a new saved build, a new completed build, or an existing saved or completed build. When you click on "edit" from an existing saved build or completed build, it will copy those parts in the system build scratchpad.
Using that setup, changes are always made in the system build, but then can be copied over an existing saved/completed build if you want. In a way, it's a lot closer to the old way of doing things. Does that sound better?
There isn't a forum yet, but that's something I'm considering.
Will look into that, thanks!
Any suggestions for how to make the new system better?
Wow - very, very pretty build! And your first one too - congrats!
They're in there - just not on the front page. If you click on the "catalog" link, it'll show everything. (Or just follow this link).
Hmmm, I could have sworn I added some 4TB drives. I'll take a look and see what's going on there. For the price drop email, I could definitely do that. There's a few other tweaks to it that I want to do, so that could fit right in.
Unfortunately I didn't make it very obvious - there's now a selector to choose which build you're currently working on. I'm sorry you ended up deleting all the parts out of a saved build - I can imagine that would be frustrating. I'm working on improving the usability of that whole aspect to make it more intuitive, and will definitely look into adding a "new build" button as well as a confirmation when about to delete everything.
Thanks! I really appreciate it. Out of curiosity, was it the print version of MaximumPC? If so, what month? (I heard it made it in one, but haven't been able to find out which one yet. Want to get hold of one if I can as a keepsake. :) )
Thanks for letting me know - should be fixed now.
Certainly - will look into that! (I presume you mean a place where you can submit your own reviews of parts? Or were you looking for a way to submit existing online reviews for a part?)
FYI, I just added sound card support. Speakers/headphones still on the roadmap.
They should be en-route as we speak/type. :)
Check back sooner rather than later... :) Sound cards are in the pipeline.
Awesome! Thanks! I'll make sure those get sent out tomorrow (Monday).
I think I'm ok for now, but if I do I'll be sure to let you know. Thanks!
Thanks for letting me know (and the browser version - that's very helpful!) -- I'll see if I can get it fixed up.
Can provide a link to do this. I suppose the current method isn't obvious - if you click on an unread message, it will change color (from highlighted blue) to white and mark it as read. I can certainly add a link to do this (and all at once) however.
That makes sense - I can certainly look into that. Or maybe something like default filter settings, perhaps?
