Comment reply on Forum Topic "an revert function for partlists"

I've got something in the pipeline that will fit perfect for this use case. We didn't want to push it live right before Black Friday and accidentally break things, so hopefully we can get it in between now and Christmas.

Definitely something on the roadmap. We're also planning on adding in full crossfire support (ie ability to mix some but not all chipsets - it doesn't always have to be the exact same)

Comment reply on Forum Topic "cpu problems"

most likely you have an AMD socket motherboard already in your part list. By default, the parts will be restricted to what is compatible with what you've already picked out. There's a toggle at the top of every part category list that lets you turn off the compatibility guide if you want to as well.

Comment reply on Blog Post "Micro Center Bundle Support Added"

  • 1 point

Since the bundle deals are in-store only, they only show up if you have entered a zip code in your merchant preferences that is within a specified radius of a Micro Center location. That's to prevent those bundle deals from showing up for the 80% of the US that doesn't have nearby access to a Micro Center location. (We do the same thing for price calculations on in-store only part deals as we'll, like their CPU deals.)

Comment reply on Forum Topic "What is up with the AMD 9xxx series?"

  • 1 point

The issue with the 9xxx series is the high TDP - many of the motherboards that match it socket-wise may not be able to handle the TDP (200+W). We're working to get the compatibility verified for the matching motherboards, but it's taking a bit of time. I hope to have it in very soon though.

Totally understand. I've sent you an email with some possible details on how we can help with this particular situation. (If you haven't received it yet, might check your spam folder. Turns out having the site registration confirmation emails come from my email address was not such a good idea - sometimes my emails get spam filtered now.)

Comment reply on Forum Topic "Are there any sites out there like this but for car stereos?"

Crutchfield has a pretty good configurator for determining what stereos and speakers will fit in your car:

Car stereos are something on our radar, and certainly something I'm interested in looking at. Many years ago I worked as a car stereo and alarm installer, and it still holds a dear place in my heart. :)

Comment reply on Blog Post "Micro Center Bundle Support Added"

We actually list quite a few combo deals now - Newegg, Micro Center, Superbiiz, and NCIX. We're at a point were we had to make it retailer neutral (we started initially only listing Newegg), and there's enough of them that we can't really do icons for each.

On the prime being another column - it's a hassle? (Could you elaborate?) We've had a ton of prime requests, with many people wanting to be able to see which items are prime eligible. The extra column was a way to quickly show that.

The amount is correct - OutletPC offers free shipping for offers over $99. (Unless they changed that policy recently and I didn't hear about it.)

Comment reply on Forum Topic "Amazon Prime price preference option on parts with Amazon listings?"

  • 1 point

The $309.99 price is valid, but there's a bug there. It's available from Amazon.com at that price (in the buy box on the right), but is out of stock.

On rebates, that's definitely something we're looking into. Their API does not provide rebate information, so we're working to find an alternate route.

You might have an ATX case already picked out in your part list? If so, it's probably excluding those by the compatibility filter. Try this link (which has the compatibility filter disabled):

That's true for most fans, but not all. Take the stock Intel CPU cooler for instance - the airflow direction is opposite of what you describe.

Comment reply on Forum Topic "10 Main Component Groups?"

  • 2 points

Thanks for the feedback!

We have it in our plans to add most of the categories you mentioned. Here's what I've got regarding your list:

4). Fan controllers and other bay accessories will come eventually. they're on the list, but currently not the top item.

5). Water cooling is actually being worked on right now. manirelli is adding those parts to our database, and I've been working on the category list pages and part pages for them. We're also looking into the compatibility aspects, but with water cooling that can be a bit tricky. We hope to have something live very soon - our goal is by Black Friday, but it'll all depend on what issues crop up between now and then that require more immediate attention.

6). Definitely on the road map.

7). More software is on the way as well. That one is pretty easy from a backend standpoint, but until recently we've been bogged down with a few other things. I'm looking into indexing things like Steam game prices as well.

8). Not sure what happened to 7.1 speakers… I'll talk to manirelli about that.

9). I can put these on the todo list. We have quite a bit of core functionality planned that I think will take precedence, but if we can either finish that early or do it in parallel I think it makes sense to add these.

10). We haven't considered PC-related furniture to date, but I'll definitely think about it. Certainly has potential.

Thanks!

Comment reply on Forum Topic "Multiple parts are making a very odd noises"

  • 2 points

That sounds a lot like coil whine to me, which is actually surprisingly common in both power supplies and GPUs. We tested a Devil13 (Radeon HD 7990) - a monster of a card when it was released. That thing would absolutely sing when you ran it hard.

I've found that the coil whine is often exhibited during load. One time I went on a mission to build an entirely fanless PC. In the process the coil whine was so loud compared to the silence - coil whine I never heard when the system had fans because they masked the noise. I could also tell when the system was processing something, because suddenly I'd hear the PSU coil whine and know that the CPU was pulling extra power. Sounds ridiculous, but it's absolutely true.

I also recently built an almost fanless PC for a website dashboard (to monitor various server health aspects for this site), and found an interesting thing… I have a variable dimmer on some lights in this room. When that dimmer is on (especially when not on 100%), it introduces noise into the 120V circuit that makes the almost-fanless PC power supply sing with coil whine. If I turn off the lights, voilla, whine noise almost completely gone. And that's on a really nice SeaSonic PSU too.

One of these days I'm going to record different variations of the noise so people can hear it and compare against what they're hearing. But I hear it often benchmarking different hardware. Even our 3-way Titan build exhibits it to some degree.
