What type of router?

So, currently, I cannot get ethernet so I am completely stuck to wireless. Currently, our wireless plan is capped to 40mbps. We use the super crappy AT&T router currently, just because that is what we have. Currently I am trying to convince my parents to get an AC router(ours is currently b/g) mostly for the 5ghz for less interference. Would we get a performance benefit, even though ours is capped to 40mbps?

...Would we get a performance benefit...

Guarantee: No. Likelihood: Possible depending on wireless router chosen.
