How to recover files from unreadable USB flash drive?

Long story short, my friend asked me to transfer some videos i have to him through his USB stick.

While everything was transferring, something somehow got corrupted. Thinking I could just restart the process, I cancelled it and unplugged the drive. However, when I put it back in, it was unreadable, and told me to reformat the drive (which erases everything. Unfortunately, he has a bunch of stuff in that drive, so reformatting is not an option.

What do I do? How can I keep his files intact?
