Support For Favorites, Case / Motherboard USB 3.0 Compatibility Added

philip

Sept. 24, 2012

A number of highly requested features have recently been added:

  • Favorite parts - now you can mark parts as a favorite, and they will automatically bubble up to the top of their corresponding product category lists. You can also view all of your favorites and their prices on your favorites page.
  • Description/notes for saved builds - you can now add a description, notes, etc. onto saved builds. As with the description for completed builds, it accepts markdown (i.e. reddit style markup).
  • Case Front-Panel USB 3.0 - the list of cases can now be filtered by whether they have front-panel USB3.0 ports or not.
  • Motherboard / Case Front-Panel USB 3.0 Port Availability / Compatibility - now if you select a motherboard that has on onboard USB 3.0 headers, but the case does not have USB 3.0 front panel ports, you'll get a compatibility warning letting you know.

In addition, over the last few weeks over 1,000 additional parts have been added to the database. Well over 3,000 custom parts have also been linked up to newly added parts in the database (and more custom parts are being added/linked up at a fairly rapid rate).

Is there any way we could get support for checking off items in a build that we're doing in stages? I've ordered the majority of the parts for my latest build, but I'd like to keep track of which parts are still outstanding. Even better would be to be able to record where and what we paid for the parts we have already acquired. I understand this is probably a lot of work.

Absolutely. That capability is actually available internally, but I haven't exposed it yet. There are a few lingering usability aspects I'm working out, so once I feel good woth those I'll turn the feature on for everyone.

If you want beta testers, I'm ready. Thanks a lot for doing this site.

Is there any work on a forum being done? For new builders, I cannot think of a better way to learn then to talk to some pro's who would be glad to help! Awesome website! Nothing else like it!

I've been holding off, but perhaps it might be time to incorporate something along those lines. I'll look into it and see what I can put together.

I think with a forum or some kind of discussion board this site could become huge.

Hey, I had a random idea for a new feature. Would it be possible to search and filter Completed Builds by budget amount? (and possibly other factors)

That way a user can compare their current build to other similarly priced builds and see how it measures up.

  • 3 points

Definitely! I'm in the process of adding in sorting methods to the completed builds. I'll make sure sorting by budget is in there as well.

Can you integrate color in the sorting/filtering if possible? That would help a lot.

  • 1 point

Just to make sure I understand correctly - you're wanting the ability to filter by case color? If so, I'm sure that can be added.

Ya I often have to google pics of products that dont have pics.

I am unable to filter motherboards by USB3 header; the option isn't there. The information does show up in the info page for individual motherboards though.

  • 2 points

You're right - I haven't added that filter (yet). I'll make sure it gets added.

Okay, sorry to rush you! Just thought I'd mention it in case it was overlooked or I was missing it. Great work as usual!

Great work on the new features! Love the site :) Some folks on bapc seem to be freaking out over the USB 3.0 compatibility warning - I've seen a couple posts asking about it. Maybe a slight explanation within the warning would help out. Again, great work!

  • 2 points

Will do - after the initial reaction I toned it down a lot (from a warning to just a "note"), but you're right - an explanation would help assuage fears.

Love your site but u guys are missing microcenters in store pickup. For example a 2500k can be had for $159.99 and a 3570k for $179.99...much cheaper than the prices u have.

This site is amazing. Simply amazing. Any chance on there being a workstation options anytime soon? That is, xeon and opteron processors and dual socket mobos?

Definitely! That's in the pipeline.

Philip, I'm new to the community and I just wanted to say that you have done an outstanding job on this site! I absolutely love putting together builds and being able to cross check for the best price on the fly is priceless! Keep up the great work!

Thank you thank you thank you! When I made my most recent build, even using Newegg's "power sort" didn't allow me to search by the presence of a USB 3 header. This will help a lot in the future!

Just when I thought your site couldn't get any better! I've had a saved build on here for a few weeks (waiting for it to drop in price a little more before I start figuring out the logistics of shipping everything) and am glad to see no USB 3.0 warnings :D

Hey, think you can add a sorting ability on video cards that says whether the card uses ddr3 memory, gddr3 memory, or gddr5 memory? A response or even this idea being implemented would be helpful, as some cheaper cards have different models that have different memory on them.

Not sure if I'm missing it, but what about the combo deals/price drops from Newegg as a new feature for this site?

Incorporating combo deals into the site is definitely something I'm looking into - hope to have something live soon.

Hi, Phil. This is ENG again. When do you plan to update your store catalog? I promise to buy more from you as soon as I see new items. Thanks.

Do you have any plans for a app or a mobile site?

I do! Pretty excited to work on a mobile version, but have a few things I'm trying to get rolled out before working on that. Once those things are wrapped up, I'll start looking into it.

i'm really glad i seen this reply. i have wanted to bug you about some sort of mobile version or app for a while, now i don't have to!

i'm assuming you will do a mobile version of the site as opposed to ios and android apps, but if you do go the app route, you have my money.

sweet!

hey, is it possible to add the number of PCI-E x16 slots to the chart when looking at motherboards?

usb internal header would be very useful info when narrowing down the choices

  • 1 point

Will do - should be able to have it in later today.

  • 1 point

For cases I mean, not motherboards. before the motherboards had the internal header, to had to route a cable from your front panel I/O out the back and plug it into one of the USB 3.0 ports on the motherboard. This is a deal breaker for me when deciding on a case. (600T :()

I absolutely love this site! I was wondering, if there would be someway to search the completed builds by keywords in the summary and title? You guys are doing an amazing job on here, it's fantastic to be able to see first hand all of these amazing builds! Keep it up!
