Description

It's my home grown, redneck engineered gaming rig. i use it primarily for Rainbow 6:Siege, and streaming of that game. CPU is overclocked to 4.0GHz. The biggest problem i ran into was when i had my PSU fan go out, and i had to open it up, ghetto rig a case fan in there and get it working, which has caused me to have to have my case oriented upside down. But, the power supply still works, so i'm not gonna spend the extra money to replace it. Cable management also kind of sucks, but oh well. Also using a cheap generic 900i monitor as my primary monitor, and a dell workstation monitor as my secondary display

can we get this featured for the sake of memes

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 4 points 1 month ago

i'm down! make my rig a total meme

Metulz 1 Build 8 points 1 month ago

This is the best rig I've seen. Holy moley. I can't upvote this enough. I love it because it is 100% unapologetic and mean. Kudos man. I'll be toasting your build with Jim Beam later tonight.

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 2 points 1 month ago

thanks brother, i appreciate that

ColdConduct 1 Build 7 points 1 month ago

This might be the dustiest and ugliest rig I've seen in a long while - and for that reason I * love it! Looks like yours has been through some wars. In a way, builds like this are a testament to how obsessive and petty PC 'enthusiast' builders really are. The ones who wake up worrying about positive and negative air pressures, orientations of fans and the CPU coolers, thermal paste application, cable management, video cards sagging, push/pull configs on radiators, whether or not a PSU intake should be top or bottom mounted, whether or not the case comes with flashing disco ball lights in it, and gasps if the case doesn't have sound dampening and rubber mounts everywhere because God forbid someone actually be able to hear fans spinning!

Sure, your temps won't be ideal and the longevity of the rig may be shortened a bit without maintenance, but who cares? The point is it gets the job done so keep using it 'til you run that baby into the ground. Guarantee in everyday, real-world usage nobody would be able to tell the difference between yours and one that has the same specs all dressed up pretty in an 'optimal' environment. There's no need to treat a computer like it's a precious piece of glass that'll shatter if you look at it the wrong way. Modern hardware is far more durable than people realize. Also cool to see you've still got the old trust AMD FX going strong.

Cheers!

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 3 points 1 month ago

thanks brotherman! couldn't have said it better myself

ApocPony 4 Builds 2 points 1 month ago

Well said +1

AMD FX-8120, GTX 1080 Ti

Nice

joneill03 3 points 1 month ago

I like it. It's different. It's got the "I work and I don't care what anybody thinks of me" attitude. Function over form.

Also for your PSU, have you checked the warranty? Some of those EVGA power supplies can have warranties up to 10 years.

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

you hit the nail right on the head, brotherman

ColinHirosky 1 Build 2 points 1 month ago

i think its time to get a new cpu, ur getting 1060 performance out of that 1080ti

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 2 points 1 month ago

but regardless, next build is going to be a threadripper build. stay tuned for that

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

i was getting 1070 performance out of my 960 with this exact same setup bro. and i know because i tested multiple different cards in this exact rig. i'm getting the full performance out of my 1080 and the rest of my components

thedude4bides 3 Builds 1 point 1 month ago

While I applaud the build, there's no way you aren't losing between 10-50 fps depending on game. You are bottlenecking the card.

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

I actually maintain insane frame rates with this cpu. I’ve got it overclocked and overvolted so it’s performing amazingly well

thedude4bides 3 Builds 1 point 1 month ago

No doubt you get results your happy with. All I’m saying is that you’re leaving some performance in the table. Similar to my phenom II build with an r9 card. Works way better than my old hd 6800 card but still below potential. When you upgrade platforms to ryzen you’ll realize it. Nonetheless, it’s good to see old parts still kicking and I’m glad it’s doing what you need/want. Cheers!

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

you made a valid point, dude: yeah, there's still probably some performance of the card left on the table, and once i upgrade to AM4 socket, i'll see so much difference there, i do agree. but the question for me is do i want to go out and spend money on a new R5/R7/Threadripper, or do i want to wait a few months for the new R3000 series chips to come out and have all the intital bugs and kinks worked out?

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 2 points 1 month ago

Just so everyone knows: this build looks like ****, is dusty as ****, and may not be up to a lot of enthusiast standards, but I am a electrical engineer: I’ve tuned my parts individually so my entire PC runs like Barry Allen on meth. It’s fast, not pretty

SychicMind 1 Build 2 points 1 month ago

Holy GPU sag Batman! This is a fine machine that looks like it could handle anything. +1

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

Bro, you just made me laugh my arse off

Gentleman00 2 Builds 2 points 1 month ago

I feel uncomfortable because of this rig

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

good thing it's not your rig, huh?

Gentleman00 2 Builds 1 point 1 month ago

Naah, but I also had super old CPU paired with a GPU from a different era, I think it was Phenom X4 (first phenom, not phenom II) with GTX 550ti. Aaaand it also had some cheapo silvery case. And dust.

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

before my brother in law gave me this 1080ti, i had my gtx 960 in this same setup, and i was managing to play battlefield 5 at ultra setting between 62-70 frames a second (i have a video up on youtube showing it and i can provide the link if you call BS), and it ran mass effect andromeda on high at about 70 fps

Zambacan 2 points 1 month ago

Nice brother in law!

Gentleman00 2 Builds 1 point 1 month ago

The PC now belongs to my bro, damn thing stutters in Roblox. xD

k3y3 1 Build 2 points 1 month ago

This needs a feature solely for being able to post.

Dracomaster9 2 points 1 month ago

this is horrific, i love it, never change your ways

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

Lol thanks brotherman

Ptolemyjohnson 1 point 1 month ago

Love the beer can

HellRaizrRod 2 Builds 1 point 1 month ago

Lol I like that your gpu is 100x classes ahead of the remainder of the components! Nice

i vocare te diaboli ustulo omnia nova nobis satana

Baglez741 1 point 1 month ago

What a setup.

Gibbytronix 1 point 1 month ago

The cable management needs help... XD that’s the ugliest rig I’ve seen lol

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

well, it is a first official rig

Flika1999 2 Builds 1 point 1 month ago

You need to clean that thing and your desk. Badly.

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

agreed, but it still works

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

I understand this build looks as much a **** show as the entire Ugandan Knuckles VS Perfect Cell dbz abridged parody arc on YouTube, but like ColdConduct said: who cares? Guarantee you that you put your enthusiast build against my home brew in gaming, and I guarantee you that you won’t be able to tell a difference where humans can actually physically see a difference

nclacs99 1 point 1 month ago

This is hilarious. This looks similar to my current setup in that, I have the right panel of the case removed (because I kept having fan issues), same keyboard, same wiring, same fan, same RAM, similar SSD (which BTW - is yours "free-floating" inside the case somewhere like mine?). All this setup needs is add a little 50 ml empty sampler of bourbon on the desk.

In all seriousness though, from one PC brother to the next - a little care and cleaning will help your rig last longer. I learned the hard way... my 4-year old CPU overheated and I suspect a lot of that is from neglect (ignored fan issues, airflow and dust).

Anyways, I love how real this setup is. Thanks for sharing.

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

Absolutely brother, it's no problem! i got a bottle of detox for a piss test for a new job on my desk lmao. nah, i got my ssd mounted in one of the hard drive bays, surprisingly. i actually just completely stripped the thing apart a few weeks ago, took everything apart, cleaned it all, put new thermal paste where thermal paste was needed, and thoroughly cleaned fans and everything. but my roommates smoke cigarettes so my **** gets dusty quick lol

nclacs99 1 point 1 month ago

Ah, I was wondering what that little bottle was. Thought they were eye drops for all the "cig" smoking.

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

nah, that's an empty ejuice bottle for my vape. i run an iJoy captain pd270 with an omega mods bft+ rdta lol. that was a 10 ml bottle of vapewild.com's october 2018 mystery flavor lol

nclacs99 1 point 1 month ago

Lol that's perfect! It really ties the room together.

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

lmao gotta disperse that cigarette smell somehow

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

but it's my left panel that's off, but my case is upside down lol

nclacs99 1 point 1 month ago

Lol, oh yeah. good point.

ZedSamCat 1 point 1 month ago

THE MEMES ARE REAL

graphnplsdontbantellmehowtofix 1 point 1 month ago

no offense but your part choices were very poor. you got a very old and underperforming cpu for an insanely high price. same with the case. you are pairing an extremely strong gpu with a potato cpu and anyways your potato monitor bottlenecks it. with a 1080 ti you want a 1440p 144hz or a 4k monitor

edit: oh lmao it was gifted, sorry i misunderstood since it was listed as money. still the cpu mobo and ram choice were extremely poor and you could have got ryzen

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

I don’t disagree with you, but most of this was bought to get a budget build for gaming going. I was broke lol and this was my first build. I’m in the process of getting a threadripper rig built

Zambacan 1 point 1 month ago

It's the anti-rig...i.like it but I would love to tidy the desk and clean the screen.

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

Lol well you’re more than welcome

hehredt03 1 point 1 month ago

You have no idea how much I hate this

DaMysteryMan 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

CPU: potatoe

RAM: slow 8 Gb

GPU: 1080 Ti

Makes perfect ******* sense. Nice!

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

Works perfectly fine for me

DaMysteryMan 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

I have a slightly similar setup, R5 1500x, just recently upgraded to 16 GBs of DDR4, 450 watt PSU, and GTX 1080

IamNotGoodWithUsernames 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

I was gonna upvoted it because of its price to performance, clean cable management, and only 2 pictures but then i saw that you had no RGB.

Now explain to me how you think anyone is gonna tolerate such a tasteless system with no RGB!

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

it has rgb; i was just too lazy to figure out which plugs went into which headers; remember, this is my FIRST BUILD

Ice44 1 Build 0 points 1 month ago

Pairs FX with 1080ti

giterdone

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 3 points 1 month ago

Congratulations, you’re able to read and connect that to a joke that was worn out and tired 10 years ago! What are you, 12?

Ice44 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

and a half*

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 3 points 1 month ago

That would explain a lot

cryingaxe18 1 Build -3 points 1 month ago

that 1080ti is 100% bottlenecked by everything else. you should have spent less money on a gpu and got a better cpu mobo and ram

iNoah 7 points 1 month ago

I think you miss-understood: Redneck Engineering

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

first, took the words out of my mouth. second, it's just like a car, man: the computer itself is not just a sum of the individual parts, but how they're tuned, and how they're used

FRGresidentDK submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

i actually don't experience any sort of bottlenecking anywhere. i've got my cpu overclocked, my memory is running at a higher clock speed with lower latency thanks to AMD OverDrive, and i'm using my SSD 90% of the time. the only components i bought out of this system were storage, mobo, cpu, and cooler. my brother in law actually gifted me the 1080ti, the ram, and the case

DaMysteryMan 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

Not a bottleneck on 4k 60
