Description

I recently graduated college and decided to get rid of my old FX 6300, GTX 660 rig that I had used throughout my college years. I had just started working and was finally able to afford to build what I had wanted to all along. This build represents my love for the game I grew up with, World of Warcraft. I started playing when I was a kid back in the old vanilla days and while I don't play it anymore, I still love the lore and everything about the world that the devs created.

This was my first attempt at tackling a project like this and I definitely learned a lot along the way. The leds are all cut from acrylic and backlit with corsair's node pro. Let me address the two-tone look of the 'Frostmourne' thing. Firstly, it isn't as noticeable in real life as it is in the photo(s). Secondly, it was somewhat intentional and came out better than I thought it would. It adds a nice effect to the leds while keeping them on the same color palette. It's more noticeable during the day but turns into exactly what I wanted at night and I love it. The landscaping was made using various products made for creating train sets.

The intent of this computer was an all around rig that could handle just about anything I throw at it. It's used for gaming, various types of work and video editing.

Ryzen 2700x - Great CPU that handles everything I throw at it without problems. $250 cheaper than the i9 9900k when I bought it and the performance difference doesn't warrant that in my book. Does what I need it to and blows my old FX 6300 out of the water.

Trident Z - Two words, it's beautiful. These ram sticks are the most appealing to my eye and work fine with this chip/board combo. I saw some reviews that these wouldn't run above 3000mhz on Ryzen chips but I've had no issues with these running 3200mhz stable 24/7. I do a lot of modding/multi-tasking and 16gb wasn't enough on my last PC so I decided to go with 32gb this time around.

RTX 2080 - Ugh.....I wanted this card to be better. It performs just like a 1080Ti but costs more. Probably the biggest regret of my build but what can you do? That being said, it works and plays fine and it overclocked surprisingly well. I was able to get +130 on the core and an extra +810 on the memory. Drives a 4k TV and Alienware 34in 3440x1440p monitor at 70-80 fps in some of the more demanding titles.

I reused some parts from various sources around my house. My brother gave me his PSU and I had some old SSDs and HDDs lying around that still run fine. Bought the NVME for my OS which is night and day compared to even a regular SSD.

Overall I'm extremely happy with how this system came out. I learned a lot along the way and it's going to be a workhorse for quite awhile.

Ah I see you used those frosted tubes from alphacool, I've been looking into those for my next build. Do you think they would be very good for diffusing light from rgb fittings with clear coolant? Very cool look btw.

I'm not sure. They diffuse the light shined onto them pretty well with the opaque coolant I have. I think it would add a pretty nice effect!

Nice work on the mods! Paper towel paper mache? How long did the scenery work take you? You must have dabbled in table top gaming at some point, no? I've been planning a case like this for my Skyrim rig, but I just have to many other projects to get out of the way first. +1.....and I don't even like WoW...

To be honest, I've never done any sort of modeling work before. All of this was a first time for me. You just have to be patient with the materials and give them time to dry and cure properly. It was actually just some shaper sheet from Woodland Scenics covered with some carving plaster. It's super easy to work with even when you use it in ways it's not intended to be used.

Ok so this is hands-down my favorite build I have ever seen. How did you make the ice/snow? I reeeeeeeeeally want to try to recreate this or something similar.

  • 1 point

Pretty much all of the products I used were from modeling train sets. It's called realistic water and I just dyed it to match the color of the saronite ice that was in WoTLK. There's also a thicker version that I used to make the ice on the wall. I tried various substances to make the snow on a few test mats, but by far soft flake snow looked the best. (I recommend avoiding baking soda, lol).

I'm glad you got featured, this build and you definitely deserve it. Build's like this, is what makes PC building so great. You can't get a sense of accomplishment from buying a mac, but you can if you build a PC. This build is so cool "Literally" that it gets to join other awesome builds on my bookmark page.

Why?! A computer is an INANIMATE OBJECT! Giving computers names seems absurd.
